For as long as I can remember, I have been addicted to lists of different sizes and shapes; from shopping lists, do-it-now lists, self-improvement lists, music playlists, top ten of everything lists, goal setting lists, you-have-it lists for different reasons. I thought I was a tad bit anal but I’ve since realised thanks to the net that it’s something I have in common with some of the most successful people around: Madonna, Ellen DeGeneres, Martha Stewart, Ben Franklin, and Thomas Jefferson. Maverick and billionaire Richard Branson has a thing about lists, “I have always lived my life by making lists: Lists of people to call, lists of ideas, lists of companies to set up, lists of people who can make things happen. Each day I work through these lists, and it is that sequence of calls that propels me forward.” Wow, that’s convincing!
1. Lists are easy to write
“I’m sure I’m good at making lists,” says Ellen DeGeneres, star TV show host and comedienne.
The truth is anyone can write lists – from five year olds to ninety-five year olds, a list needs no special skill. Yet lists are a powerful way to assemble together disparate tasks that need doing, different goals that need to be achieved, books that need to be read, places that need to be seen, people that need to be contacted or even just groceries that need to be bought. Lists can be for a day or for the week or for a whole month.
Lists can be in order or be jumbled up; the items need have no connect with each other or might consist of different to-dos for one major task such as that surprise birthday party you are throwing for your spouse.
Lists can be short or long, it doesn’t matter. “I am also a huge fan of Post-It notes!” says Leah Busque, founder of Taskrabbit.

2. Lists help you max each 24 hours
Think of a list as a compass, a GPS for the next 24 hours. One step at a time, that’s what keeps us in sync with the pace of our lives. Achievers are compulsive list-makers, planning not just their day but also their week, month and year.

While lists may be easy to write, the best lists are a road map that move you forward through the day. A list is a reminder of the many things you still have left to do before you declare pack up. It’s a kick in the butt telling you whether or not you have managed to make the day count. Sorry, your “I don’t have time” excuse may not work here. The busier you are, the more you need lists. 4. Lists help you reinvent yourself
If you want to change yourself and your lifestyle, there’s one thing you may want to do first: Make a list of the new habits you want to develop. How long does it take to form a new habit? An average of 66 days, according to a 2009 study from University College, London. Repetition and giving yourself time to adjust are the main factors in forming a new behavior pattern. That’s exactly what a list is. Thoughts on paper. Lists are for committing to yourself what you want to do, where you want to go, who you want to be.
5. Lists can be crossed off
There couldn’t be any more fun reason than this. It’s important to cross off each task as you complete it. I use a thick felt pen to cross off my done tasks. That red line through one more task done for the day is sheer pleasure and powerful motivation to get through the next one. Knowing an irksome or difficult task is now behind us can lift our spirits for the whole day. The harder the task is to do, the greater the sense of achievement and relief it gives us. A sense of accomplishment is what a list can give you. Try it. But do remember that you have committed to action. Making a list is the first step but it’s not going to get you anywhere unless you follow it.
